Literature

Scholar’s will continue to read 2 more folktales from the continent of Africa,  “Ananse and the Lizard” and “Anansi and the Turtle Goes To Dinner”.  The name Anansi, “the trickster”, is spelled differently depending on which region of Africa it was retold from.

Our poem for this week is “Little Miss Muffet”.

Scholars will continue with the read aloud is Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater.

History
In History, our scholars reviewed “How to Read a Map” and were introduced to our Early Explorers including the Vikings, Amerigo Vespucci and Matthew Henson.
Our scholars will be introduced to one of our early explorers, Christopher Columbus. They will learn more about this explorer including his early life and his perseverance to fund his long awaited voyage.

Science
In Science, our scholars reviewed Our Five Senses and Healthy Activities.
Our scholars will be introduced to the Three States of Matter: solid, liquid and gas. They will also develop their understanding of the solid state of matter later in the week.

Spalding This week in Spalding, scholars reviewed all learned phonograms! They worked on nouns and practiced their letter formations!

Next week, scholars will begin their week with a phonogram assessment. We will begin working with action verbs, learn new vocabulary, spelling words and learn four new phonograms!  We will continue to work on phonemic awareness and letter formations.

Phonograms: r, t, v, w
Spelling words: me, do, and, go
Vocabulary: all, red, old, but, six, by

Math:  Kindergarten Mathematicians wrapped up Unit Two, Numbers to Five, and began Unit Three, Numbers to Ten.  Next week we will explore sets up to eight, practice number formation and continue to create and read graphs.  We will compare the sets represented using the terms:  more than, less than, and the same as.

Distance Learners:  Please submit the following assignments to Google Classroom:

9/22:  p. 61

9/23:  p. 63

Exemplar Work:

On Thursday, Kindergarten celebrated the beginning of our new math unit by reading Town Mouse, Country Mouse (retold by Paul Galdnone), counting sets and creating our own Town Mouse or Country Mouse with cheese wedges in sets of 6, 7, or 8.

Our classrooms are graced with delightful work created by your kindergartner.  Here is a sample of beautiful, student generated work.  For this project, the students were instructed to color their mouse according to their choice:  realistically or using their favorite colors.  This student chose to use a range of color in the vibrant style of Picasso or Matisse.  The style of cutting is spot on and typical for a student at this age as they are learning the difficult task of carefully maneuvering their scissors and turning their paper with their non-writing hand to cut in narrow spaces and nooks and crannies.  Students were led in drawing free hand triangles with pencils, outlining in black crayon, cutting them out and gluing in sets of six, seven or eight.  This piece of work celebrates the heart, mind, and joy of a Kindergartner.  Our scholar’s creations are laminated and  hanging in their cubbies where they will continue to bring beauty to our classes for the rest of the quarter.
